This watercolour was probably executed at Loch Maree, Ross-shire. Thorburn moved to London in 1885 but returned to Scotland in September 1889 for the first of his many trips to Gaick in Inverness-shire. Thorburn was also regularly invited to Inveran, on Loch Maree in Ross-shire, by the lawyer John Henry Dixon
