Lot Essay

This "gloss swallowtail" is one of the most spectacular butterflies of New Guinea. Sometimes referred to as the Blue Mountain Butterfly (or the Ulysses), it occurs in a series of local races from the Moluccas eastwards through New Guinea to the Bismarcks and Solomons, and north-eastern Australia. The caterpillars feed on Euodia, a member of the citrus-family (Rutaceae). The dazzling males can often be seen ranging up and down small rivers and streams, where they pursue each other in strong and rapid flight, or chase their almost equally brilliant females in courtship.
