Twenty-two butterflies, in three columns, all belonging to the family NYMPHALIDAE, including Vindula arsinoe (subfamily HELICONIINAE, male 1,2, female 3,4 - cf. the third sheet of lot 309:9,10), Cethosia cydippe (HELICONIINAE, 16,17), Parthenos aspila (LIMENITINAE, 20,21), and five species of Hypolimnas (NYMPHALINAE, H. pithoeka 5,6; H. bolina male 7,22, female 8,9: H. deois male 18,19, female 10,11; H. antilope 12,13; and H. misippus male 14,15)

signed 'Ellis Rowan'; watercolour with bodycolour on grey paper
22.1/8 x 13¼in. (56.2 x 33.7cm.)

The inclusion of so many diverse-looking Hypolimnas species on one sheet, including a mimic of Taenaris (H. deois - cf lot 308), suggests that Rowan was working from a well-informed source.

Thirty-four butterflies, in four columns, representing the PAPILIONIDAE (Papilio ambrax 29,30), and various members of the NYMPHALIDAE, including subfamily SATYRINAE (Melanitis 3,4; Lamprolenis nitida 13,14; Mycalesis duponcheli 17,18), HELICONIINAE (Cethosia chrysippe 23,24), NYMPHALINAE (Hypolimnas misippus female 15,16; Yoma algina 25,26; Precis erigone 31,32; Mynes 33,34), and DANAINAE (Euploea 11,12, 19-22, 27,28; E. sylvester 1,2; E. stephensii 9,10)

signed 'Ellis Rowan'; watercolour with bodycolour on grey paper
22.1/8 x 15in. (56.2 x 38.1cm.)

Twenty butterflies, in three columns, belonging to the PIERIDAE (Delias aruna 11,12 - cf. lot 305: 21,22), NYMPHALIDAE subfamily HELICONIINAE (Vindula arsinoe male 9,10 - cf. the illustrated sheet of lot 309:1-4), NYMPHALIDAE subfamily CHARAXINAE (Charaxes latona male 3,4, female 7,8), and NYMPHALIDAE subfamily NYMPHALINAE (Hypolimnas misippus female 5,6, 19,20; H. bolina 17,18; Doleschallia 15,16; Yoma algina 13,14)

all signed 'Ellis Rowan'; watercolour with bodycolour on grey paper
22.1/8 x 15in. (56.2 x 38.1cm.) and smaller three (3)

Lot Essay

Charaxes butterflies are difficult to capture without the use of fruit-baited traps, so the inclusion of both sexes of C. latona is notable.
