MARIAN ELLIS ROWAN (1848-1922)
Thirty-four insects, laid out in a semi-regular array but not in columns, all of which with one exception are beetles (order Coleoptera). The exception is Oncomeris, a large shield- or stink-bug (superfamily PENTATOMOIDEA family TESSARATOMIDAE, 14), quite easily mistaken for a beetle even though it is a totally different sort of insect. The Coleoptera are mostly various longicorns, a group of beetles with almost absurdly long antennae (family CERAMBYCIDAE, e.g. 5-10, 13, 15, 22, 24-33), and numerous scarabs (superfamily SCARABAEOIDEA), including a stag beetle (family LUCANIDAE, 11), Xylotrupes and other dynastines (family SCARABAEIDAE subfamily DYNASTINAE, 1, 12, 16), various relatives of the "Chistmas beetles" (family SCARABAEIDAE subfamily RUTELINAE, 17-21) and a brilliant green chafer (family SCARABAEIDAE subfamily CETONIINAE, 23). A ground beetle (family CARABIDAE, 23) is also represented.

22.1/8 x 15in. (56.2 x 38.1cm.)
One hundred and fifty insects, laid out in an orderly but non-regular array, and dominated at the top by a large dragonfly
(order Odonata, family AESHNIDAE, 101), and near the lower corners by two stick insects (order Phasmatodea, family PHASMATIDAE, 148,149). Many longicorn beetles (Coleoptera, family CERAMBYCIDAE) occupy the top left corner of the sheet, with ranks of weevils (Coleoptera, family CURCULIONIDAE) occupying most of the foot of the page with a mixture of weevils, longicorns and other beetles dominating the top right. At least four other major groups of insects are represented, including true flies (Diptera, e.g. 129 (TACHINIDAE), 130 (BOMBYLIIDAE)); wasps, ants ichneumons etc. (Hymenoptera, e.g. 135 (ICHNEUMONOIDEA), 143 (POMPILIDAE)); ant lions (Neuroptera, 133,134 (MYRMELEONTIDAE)); and plant bugs (Hemiptera, e.g. 131 (CICADIDAE), 132 (PENTATOMIDAE)).
