Each with oil-lamp shaped body with flaming finial and scrolling handle terminating in an eagle's head, the central nozzle issuing two detachable scrolling branches terminating in a cylindrical nozzle, above a stiff-leaf base with waisted foot and rectangular plinth

Lot Essay

These candelabra closely relate to a drawing in the Houthakker Collection of circa 1780, attributed to the French School, which is illustrated in J. Bourne and V. Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, London, 1991, plate 421
They further relate to a pair sold from the collection of Monsieur V.I. in Brussels at Sotheby's Monaco, 3 March 1990, lot 1 and one sold anonymously in these Rooms, 21 November 1985, lot 1
