AN ITALIAN SCAGLIOLA TABLE TOP, early 18th Century

The rectangular top with central floral arabesque medallion enclosing a vignette of Poseidon pursuing a maiden, the outer border with Bacchanalian scenes, grotesque beasts, fauns and further mythological figures, flanked by espagnolette mask-headed angle cartouches depicting courtly figures in landscapes, on an Italian stained wood base, the gadrooned collar above a pierced frieze carved with imbricated C-scrolls and acanthus-trails and centred by a mask, on acanthus-wrapped baluster legs with guilloche recessed panels above a hatched foot joined by a channelled acanthus-carved X-shaped stretcher, centred by a fruiting spray
