The scrolled segmental cornice enriched with foliate trails above a pair of shaped glazed doors with blue cotton lining enclosing a fitted interior with three adjustable shelves and later floral paper-lining, the canted trellis-work pilaster strips with pierced bracket bases, above a rockwork-carved apron and basket-weave bombé sides, the base section with serpentine-fronted rectangular top above three graduated long drawers with herring-bone parquetry panels, crossbanded in amaranth and simulating three drawers between pine and lacewood borders, with further basket-weave parquetry to the sides, on moulded plinth and cabriole feet, previously with section between top and base, probably Mainz, with pencil inscription to the reverse HG /2...Aben

Its commode/cabinet type and serpentined and voluted forms with canted and pilastered angles relates to masterpiece patterns presented by Mainz cabinet-makers in the 1740's; However, the chequered borders to the trellis-veneered drawers and their ribbon-bow escutcheons demonstrate the antique taste of the 1770's (see: H.
