The scene depicted is from Genesis, Chapter 28, Verses 10 to 22 from the Old Testament. Jacob, resting on his journey to Harran, dreams of a ladder reaching up to heaven with angels going up and down, while God promises land to Jacob's descendants, the Israelites, from above
