Lot Essay

Maximilien de Béthune, duc de Sully, baron de Rosny (1560-1641) was the superintendent of Finances of Henri IV, King of France. Rosny's power eclipsed that of the chancellor Pompone de Bellièvre who stood for the old tradition of the French Monarchy. He was the 'King's man' subordinating private and particular interests to the authority of the State. Rosny's loyalty was copiously rewarded with various functions and titles.
His rol in history was that he seriously contributed to the rehabilitation of France after the Wars of Religion (1562-1590)
