REDOUTÉ, Pierre-Joseph (1759-1840) and Claude-Antoine THORY (1759-1827). Les Roses. Paris: C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1824 [-1826].

3 volumes in 2, 8° (244 x 160mm). Half-title and title to volume I, 159 (only, of 160) stipple-engraved plates, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Charlin, Langlois, Lemaire and others after Redouté. (Lacking titles and half-titles for volumes II-III, and one plate, light spotting, heavier on tissue guards and some text leaves.) Contemporary red half morocco gilt (very lightly scuffed).

First octavo edition of the Roses, which was issued in 40 parts, each with four plates. Whilst most copies appear to be in three volumes, Stafleu cites a two-volume edition. The present copy is accompanied by a seven-page pamphlet, Notice nécrologique sur la vie et les travaux de M. Redouté by M. L. Bouchard, Paris: 1840, extracted from the Annales de la Société Royale d'Horticulture de Paris (loosely inserted in volume II). It was presumably re-issued to honour the artist in the year of his death. Stafleu & Cowan 8749; Nissen BBI 1599; Dunthorne 233. Sold not subject to return. (2)
