Title, contents leaf, 3 general maps (2 double-page, 1 folding; all hand-coloured in outline), 40 maps (9 double-page), 7 town plans, 12 plates (7 double-page). (25 mm. tear to upper blank margin of map numbered 11, 25mm. tear to lower margin of folding general map of Chinese Tartary just affecting image.) Contemporary French marbled-sheep-backed boards, spine gilt (but chipped at head and foot, extremities rubbed). Provenance: TSARKOE SELO PALACE LIBRARY (ink stamp at foot of title).

A FINE COPY WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE OF THE FIRST EDITION, with the full compliment of maps, town plans and plates of chinese life, customs and natural history. Later editions (titled Nouvel Atlas de la Chine.) were either intended to accompany du Halde's Description de la Chine, or, when issued separately, did not include as many engravings. The maps of China, Tibet, Tartary and Korea are based on maps printed from a survey carried out by Jesuit missionaries between 1708 and 1716 at the instigation of the Emperor Kangxi. Cf.
