GOOS, Pieter (1615-1675). The Lightning Columne, or Sea-Mirrour, Contaigning The Sea-Coasts of the Northern, Eastern and Western Navigation... as alsoo [sic] The Situation of the Northernly Countries, as Islands, the Strate Davids, the Isle of Jan-Mayen, Bears-island, Old-Greenland, Spitsbergen and Nova Zembla. Amsterdam: Peter Goos, dwelling on the water at the signe of the Golden Sea-Mirrour, 1674.

2 parts in 1 volume, 2° (444 x 270mm). Letterpress title within wide decorative engraved border (reinforced at inner margin). 59 engraved maps and coastal charts (2 folding, 57 double-page), 4 engraved views and maps in the text, numerous other woodcut illustrations (2 with moveable overslips). (28 maps shaved with slight loss, lower left corner of the folding map of Bergen torn with loss, browned throughout, margin of title holed, worm-track from part 2 L4 to the end.) Old vellum (browed and somewhat soiled). Provenance: Richard Beale (inscription A1 'Marchant of Ham'[burg]); Thomas Hill (various manuscript inscriptions, the earliest dated 1700); Guy Montagu Marston (book-plate).

A RARE ISSUE of the English edition of Goos's Zeespiegel. The maps are bound as follows: part I, 33 maps, unnumbered and numbered (i.e. [3 maps] , 4-5, [1 map], 7-12, [1 map], 14-23, XXIII, [1 map], 24-31); part II, 26 maps, unnumbered and numbered (i.e. [4 maps], 36-53, 3, [3 maps]). In this copy map 18 in the first part is the substitute De Custen van Finmarckten tusschen Dronten en Sanien, and the atlas does not include the chart De Custen van Engelandt, tusschen Fierly en Poortlant. The almanac is for the years 1675-1682, this copy probably being similar to the copy in the Staatsbibliothek Marburg, which is lacking it's title-page. Cf. Koeman IV Goos 38 and 39.
