Engraved frontispiece, 8 portraits, 6 plates and plans (4 folding, one with neat old repair), circa 68 illustrations (the majority of medals or coins), 4 headpieces, 4 initials, folding engraved and letterpress plate of an inscription and its translation. (Worm-track in upper inner margin from B1 to P4, some of the holes neatly repaired.) Speckled sheep, spine gilt (repairs to spine and corners, later pastedowns). Provenance: F E J G (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of 'an important work. Fanelli was not present at the seige of the Acropolis by the Venetians in 1687, but he provides us with a detailed account based on authentic documents, and a history of Athens... Of especial interest is the plate showing the bombardment of the Acropolis by the Venetians and the plan of Athens which is based on Captain Verneda's notes, but Fanelli added bits from Spon's... plan which were no longer in existence by 1687' Blackmer 573; Morazzoni p.229.
