MAXIMILIAN, Alexander Philipp, Prince of Wied-Neuwied. Voyage dans l'Intérieur de l'Amérique du Nord, exécuté pendant les années 1832, 1833 et 1834. Paris: Firmin Didot Frères for Arthus Bertrand, 1840-43.
3 text volumes, 8° (227 x 150mm) and plate volume, large oblong 2° (437 x 595mm). Text volumes: Half-titles, titles, 29 wood-engraved plates, lithographic plan of a Mandan village, engraved folding map of the route of Prince Maximilian, hand-coloured in outline, wood-engraved illustrations. Plate volume: 81 AQUATINT PLATES AFTER KARL BODMER by Weber, Hürlimann, Salathé and others, uncoloured, each with small blind-stamp "C. BODMER Direc.t" within a cartouche, comprising 48 larger plates and 33 smaller plates. (Some spotting throughout, especially to plate volume, a few tissue guards creased.) Uniform contemporary half sheep, spines tooled in gilt and blind, over brown cloth boards, marbled edges (corners of plate volume slightly bumped).
First French edition of this impressive record of the North American Indians and their country. Bodmer's sensitive and detailed images of the Indian tribes, their daily activities, and the landscape they inhabited make this "one of the most interesting publications ever issued from the press" (Sabin 47017). The work was first published in German, then in French, and finally in English. The plates are captioned in all three languages, and in this copy, the captions (including the imprints and Bodmer's blind-stamp) are identical to those of the English edition described by Abbey (Travel 615). However, the present plate volume does not have the English edition's title page, nor the lithographic table or key-plate to plate 21 found in the German edition. Sabin 47015 (text only). (4)
