Lot Essay

The officer portrayed in the present lot has been hitherto identified as Engel de Ruyter (1649-1683), son of Michiel de Ruyter. However this seems very unlikely as Engel de Ruyter was only born in 1649 and would seem to be too young to be identified with the sitter
