4 volumes, 4° (249 x 191mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by J. Nutting after Melchior Füsslin, titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, engraved title after Anna Wasera, letterpress dedication and titles, 131 engraved plates including approximately 85 views, town plans, and maps, many folding, 2 with over-slips. (Several folding plates torn at margin, occasional spotting and browning, final three quires with some damage to lower outer blank margins.) Near-contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in six compartments with red and brown morocco lettering-pieces (extremities rubbed, lightly scuffed).
Second edition of Scheuchzer's survey of Switzerland, greatly expanded from the first edition published in 1708 (cf. lot ??). (The first edition contained three journeys, whilst the present has nine.) The plates are mainly views and maps, although there are also plates of geological profiles and samples, scientific equipment and regional flora and fauna, including some fabulous beasts. The plates from the first three journeys, which were used in the first edition, are sponsored by members of the Royal Society in London, to whom the first edition was dedicated. The three plates paid for by Sir Isaac Newton each have the dedication inscribed on them. German editions of the work, entitled Naturhistorie des Schweizerlandes were published in Zürich in 1716-18, 1746 and 1752. Lonchamp 2641; Brunet V, 198. (4)
