TURNER, Joseph Mallord William (1775-1851). Picturesque Views in England and Wales... Engraved under the superintendence of Mr. Charles Heath... descriptive illustrations... by H.E.Lloyd. London: J.Haddon for [Robert Jennings and others] and Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans, [1827]-1838.
2 volumes, imperial 4° (366 x 260mm). Wood-engraved title vignettes, 96 steel-engraved proof plates after Turner by R.Wallis, W.Radclyffe, J.T.Willmore and others. (Some old dampstaining to about 30 plates, most with some marginal spotting.) Old maroon morocco gilt, original upper wrappers to parts 7 & 6 bound into vols.I & II respectively (extremities rubbed, lower spine compartment of vol.II lacking). Provenance: early pencilled note at front of vol.I ( "The Publication of this work was commenced by Jennings in 1828 and finished by Longman &c in 1838").
The publishing history of this work is obscure, but plainly complicated. From the imprints on the plates it would appear that the work was initiated by Robert Jennings in March 1827; continued by him as a solo effort until mid-way through 1829; he then took various partners until his envolvment ended at the beginning of 1831; the work was taken over by Moon, Boys & Graves 1831 to the end of 1834; then Hodgson, Boys & Graves for most of 1835; with Longman & Co. completing the work 1835 to 1838. According to Lowndes the work was published in five different forms, varying in price from 16gns. to 75l.12s., and in size from Royal 4° to Royal 2°.: from the wrappers it is clear that this set is bound from 24 parts, published at 1gn. each, large paper proofs on imperial 4°. Cf. Lowndes p.2723 (incorrect publication dates). (2)
