Lot Essay

The present lot depicts the artists Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman, Jan Wiegers and George Martens seated in the former Café Dik, Groningen, where they would meet their fellow-member of the 'Ploeg' movement, Dijkstra. It is one of the few impressions known in colours. The woodcuts by Dijkstra and texts on the reverse are proofs for "Boek van Trijntje Soldaats", of which the final edition was printed by Werkman. The present lot was bought from the artist in 1962.
