Lots 185-205 all come from the collection of the late Belgian novelist, dramatist and artcritic Baron Roger Avermaete (1893-1988).
Born in Antwerp, he was a professor at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten between 1933 and 1969 and at about the same time he was the director of the Instituut voor Kunstambachten. He also was the founder of the periodical Lumière (1919-1923), which was illustrated by a.o. Masereel, van Straten, Minne and the brothers Cantré.
In 1925 Avermaete was asked by the Paris publisher Dorbon to write a survey on woodcuts, a project on which he worked for three years, studying such prints in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. In these years he was given the present lots. In 1928 his La gravure sur bois moderne et occident was published by Dorbon ainé in Paris, comprising many original woodcuts
