Lot Essay

Stylistically this image recalls the type exemplified by lot 9, although the physiognomy observed in the present case suggests a later phase of development of that same style. Indiginous ethnic traits are strong and the physical type compares well with that which constantly appears in the sculptures of the late Majapahit period (see With 1920: pls. 149 and 151; Fontein 1971: cat. 19a-b, 68 and 69; Scheurleer and Klokke 1988: cat. 49).
