Lot Essay

The sculptural style and the physiognomy of this figure reveal strong influences of the Post-Gupta tradition of India. These are also apparent in the contemporaneous Buddha images from East and Central Thailand and maritime Southeast Asia( see also lots 2 and 55). The closest parallels to this sculpture appear to be found in the products of Cambodia, especially in those from the region of Angkor Borei (for these see Dupont 1955: pls. 44-46; Boisselier 1955: pls. 88-90; Lu 1969: cat. 3).
