The contents of the letter include "We moved over here yesterday. The 3rd Buffs taking our place at Fort Crealock. We have been in it a little more than a month and are glad to be moving again. I was on the sick list for two or three days, but am now alright again-a little touch of jaundice.
I can't help thinking of the poor Prince Imperial, what a way the Empress must be in. I am afraid everyone will think it is a disgrace on our army, no-one seemingly having noticed in the surprise that he was left behind. Surely someone ought to have looked after him. These Bettington's Horse must have lost their heads not to have stood by him. A Zulu had been seen lurking about a little previously and the Prince had said we must be off at once then. This is a war of surprises.
