In 1870 the Parisian Léon Arpels opened a small shop on the Place Vendome, joined at the turn of the century by Alfred van Cleef, a young Dutch gem-cutter. The establishment was singled out shortly by the Duke of Westminster and through his patronage became famous in Paris, London and New York
