A SILVER SALVER, of shaped rectangular form with reeded rim, the raised side engraved with the coat of arms of the prominent Portuguese Jewish family Lopez Suasso, France, circa 1840
23 x 23 cm(506gr)
Lopez Suasso was a family of bankers and merchants originally from Spain with branches in England and Holland in the 17th and 18th Centuries.
King Charles II of Spain granted an estate in Brabant together with the title of Baron to Antonio (Isaac) Lopez Suasso, one of the leading shareholders of the West India Company in 1676. His grandfather Dr. Pedro Lopes Fránces was the first in line of the Suasso family and settled in Bordeaux in 1585.
The coat of arms of the different branches of the Suasso family all contain wolves (Lopez means wolf), rampant lions, leaves and sometimes stars with some variations. The present coat of arms most probably belonged to the branch of Jonkheer Moses (alias Moses Israël) Lopes Suasso, since this branch bears trefoils in its coat of arms.
For the Suasso family see Enc. Judaica vol. 15 cols. 467-468. For the coat of arms and genealogical information see "Nederlands Adelsboek" 45 's Gravenhage 1952, p. 151-166, "Nederlands Adelsboek" 15 's Gravenhage 1917, p. 406, Heraldic Collection of Steenkamp-Damstra.
