Manuscript. Synagogue Music. Isaac Heymann.
Autograph manuscript signed 4 times (Isaac Heymann), "Psalm 24 le-David Mizmor" and "Uwe'-Nuchôh Jômar", two original compositions, undated.
1 (title) + 6 and 1 (title) + 4 pages, written in ink, lightly soiled, scattered foxing, bound in original red full cloth, gilt-tooled on front cover, 31 x 23.3 cm.
Isaac Heymann (1818-1906), nicknamed the "Gneser Chazzen" was the chief cantor of Amsterdam from 1856 until his death in 1906. He was not only a talented singer but also a gifted composer of Jewish lithurgical melodies and may be considered as one of the founders of the typical Dutch chazzanut. Despite his numerous compositions, until recently almost nothing appeared in print. To the published material belong four psalms dedicated to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands on the occasion of her coronation in 1898. These psalms appeared in print under the collective name Shire Toda La-El (De Nieuwe Muziekhandel, Amsterdam, 1899). The manuscript offered here comprises two compositions of which the first one Psalm 24 le-David Mizmor was never published. The second composition u-ve-Nuchoh Yo'mar, was published only recently (1990), on the basis of our manuscript, by Hans Bloemendal in his compilation: "Amsterdam Chazzanut", (Frits Knuf publishers, Buren, Holland), page 165. See also: M.H. Gans, Memorbook pp. 415, 562, 567, 698, 702; Sendrey, Bibliography of Jewish Music, no. 6832.
We are grateful to Professor Dr. Hans Bloemendal, chief cantor of the "Nederlands-Israëlietische Hoofdsynagoge" in Amsterdam, for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
