C. Payne, Animals in Bronze, Antique Collectors Club, 1986, p.387, fig. M32
The present group is one of Gratchev's most succesfull conceptions of Russian life. It skilfully combines the detailed genre quality of Russian bronzes with an animated impression of snow and movement. The racing troika and its elegant passengers was a composition which Gratchev had previously used as a single sculpture (cf. Payne, op.cit., fig.M31); but here he has combined and contrasted it with a small peasant sled and thus produced a more monumental and interesting work
