A COLLECTION OF WORKS FROM THE ESTATE OF JOHAN COENRAAD ALTORF (1876-1955)
The following seventeen lots present part of a small collection from the estate of the sculptor Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876-1955).
Altorf belonged to the circle around the art-critic and artist H.P. Bremmer at the beginning of this century. His collection consisted mainly out of works by friends
The work of Altorf shows some resemblance with his contemporary fellow-sculptors Mendes da Costa and John Raedecker. Altorfs work, however, comparably seems to emphasize more on a characteristic decorative styling. Furthermore his work shows a great awareness of the materials he was working with, such as the use of bone and expensive
ivory, next to the more traditional materials as bronze and stone.
