Lot Essay

The attribution was advanced by Professor Sumowski. The brown ink corrections are probably by Samuel van Hoogstraten, and this drawing is comparable with another van Renesse drawing corrected by him in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, 1985, 6, no. 2159x. Rembrandt also corrected his pupil's drawings and Professor Sumowski does not exclude the possibility that the corrections may be by his hand
