Lot Essay

This is related to no. 14 from a series of 18 etchings of landscapes, by the artist dated 1615 (Hollstein, XXXIII, no. 191; illustrated XXXIV, p.100), which is in the same direction and measures 116 x 313 mm. (see illustration). This drawing may be compared in handling to the watercolour in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, M. Schapelhouman, P. Schatborn, Land & Water, Dutch Drawings from the 17th Century in the Rijksmuseum Print Room, Zwolle/Amsterdam, 1987, pp.18-19. J.G. van Gelder, Jan van de Velde: 1593-1641, tekenaar-schilder, The Hague, 1933, p.85, no. 43a, plate XI, fig. 22, mentions another drawing, related to the print, which is identified as a copy after it in Hollstein, XXXIII, no. 191.
Another prepatory drawing for a print in the same direction is in the Abrams collection, W.W. Robinson, Seventeenth Century Drawings, A Selection from the Maida and George Abrams Collection, Amsterdam, 1991, pp. 70-71, no. 26. As Robinson observed, of the landscape drawings related to prints by van de Velde, many are in reverse to the prints, but some are in the same direction, see Hollstein XXXIII, nos. 223, 226, 236, 265 and 284, as well as the studies for Hollstein 188 (Abrams collection, Boston) and 190 (Peck collection, Boston)
