THE TILE COLLECTION OF THE LATE CHRISTIAAN HELFFER
Christiaan Helffer was born in Amsterdam in 1893. He started collecting tiles from an early age onwards. His wife and he travelled around Europe in their search for Dutch tiles.
He died in 1982 after a long life of Kunstontmoetingen.
A DATED ARMORIAL FLEMISH HEARTH TILE, unglazed, in relief, modelled as a Renaissance-style frontispiece, depicting the motto plus Oltre, within a pennant surrounding a crowned coat-of-arms with the bicephalous Habsburg eagle, flanked by two griffins, dated 153?, second quarter 16th Century (one corner broken, damages)
