Lot Essay
The present lot depicts Marthe, the wife of the artist and their daughter Noële born in 1896 in front of their little house in Bretagne which Denis had hired for the summer vacation in Perros-Guirec. Since their honeymoon in 1893 Denis came here with his family every year.
The picture is probably identical with the painting Jan Toorop bought in 1901 at the La Libre Esthétique exhibition in Brussels which is registrated in Denis' archive as 'Pas de la Porte Verte'. The two artists met at a later date, somewhere around 1908-1910. It is unknown if Toorop bought the pictures directly for Leuring or that Leuring acquired it later from Toorop.
Leuring was a man of science but had always been interested in art. In 1896 he organized with his friend and fellow student Johan Huizinga one of the first exhibitions of Van Gogh in Holland. Later when Leuring moved to The Hague he became acquainted with the well-known art-critic H.P. Bremmer and supported several artists financially. The Dutch symbolist Johan Thorn Prikker was one of his favourite artists and during his life Leuring acquired a large collection of his work. In 1902 Leuring commissioned Henry van der Velde to build a house in Scheveningen (Wagenaarweg 30). It might have been Henry van der Velde, a friend and admirer of Denis who drew Leurings attention to the work of his fellow artist.
To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist's work being prepared by Dominique Denis and sold with a photo certificate by Dominique Denis, dated 11 September 1991
