Lot Essay

These two watercolours depict the Pearl Mosque which was built by Aurangzebe in the Palace in the Red Fort, Delhi and The Golden Mosque of Nawab Rosham al-Daula, Delhi.
Around 1840 there was a movement led by Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe and Sayyid Ahmed to record monuments such as these in Delhi. Amed Kahn published a highly influential book in Urdu, Athar al-Sanadid, Delhi, 1847 which was illustrated with woodcuts based on these drawings
