Cf. The plate comes from the Royal House of Germany: Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and belong to Karl, 1735-1780. It is more than likely that he ordered several plates like this if he was indeed 'aping the glories of Versailles'. The crown and the cross suggest that he was a prince of the Holy Roman Empire although there is no record of him being so in the book and the connection remains uncertain.
