Lot Essay

Zoffany went to India in 1783 with a letter of introduction to Warren Hastings in which Lord Macartny describes him as 'the greatest painter that ever visited India'. Very few drawings survive from this period (1783-1789) on account of the contents of his studio being destroyed in 1832, but those which do, appear to date from November 1788 when he returned from Lucknow to Calcutta
