Lot Essay

Sutherland was commissioned by a Parliamentary Committee to paint a portrait of Churchill which was to be presented to him on his eightieth birthday. The sittings began at Chartwell in August 1954 and continued throughout September. Sutherland found Churchill a particularly restless sitter. The final painting was destroyed by Lady Churchill
