A PARCEL-GILT DOUBLE BEAKER FOR CIRCUMCISION

The barrel-shaped beaker on a slightly raised circular base, fitting together at the rims, each cup realistically engraved to simulate curved wooden staves bound by raised circular hoops.
One half dedicated to "kos shel metsitsah", the other:"shel berakhah", both beakers almost identically inscribed in Hebrew (some mis-spelling): This beaker is especially dedicated to be beaker of metsitsah, (on the other of berakhah) at the holy circumcision. This is the donation of Bonfil ha-Levi...from Brussels when he fulfilled the commandment of Godfather together with his wife...Saraleh Godmother for the son of his brother Moshe son of Noach Alexander ha-Levi here Brussels on Sunday 19th of Elul 1788.
Both beakers 14.4cm high (141gr)

Provenance:
This double beaker has belonged to the present owner's grandfather, Axel Margolinsky (1888-1967), member of a prominent Danish Jewish family, Mohel of the Copenhagen Jewish community until 1961. The beaker was given to him during his detention in the concentration camp Theresienstadt from October 1943 till April 1945, where he even managed to perform circumcisions.
