Lot Essay

This makara stone figure is similar in form to the previous lot, but even more stylized. The streams of lotus flowers which fall down from the top of the rock-motif are much invaded by floral scrolls and curly leaf-motifs.The curled trunk has become a real loose entity of a rock supported by the open jaw of the makara. This shows two rows of teeth which are transformed into vegetative forms. The aperture is shaped like a flat-bodied jar and supports prismatic motifs representing rock terraces of the cosmic mountain.
