Lot Essay

Conceived as an Olympic altar in the French 'antique' manner promoted by C. Percier and P. Fontaine's, Receuil de decorations interieures 1801, with its enamelled dial incorporated in a Grecian rectangular plinth-supported and plinth-capped pedestal mosiac-veneered in malachite. It is embellished with palmette and figurative bas-reliefs, comprising an Apollo-mask and heroic-medallion suspended between discus-throwing athletes, and accompanied by an Apollo badge of a lion-supported lyre and figures emblematic of fame and history. An 1823 design in St. Petersburg for a related pedestal clock, manufactured at the Ekaterinburg Lapidary Works, is illustrated V. B. Semynov Malachite, 1987, p. 113, fig. 15.
