Lot Essay

The Etruscan-black pedestal, formed as a golden flower-garlanded and truncated column with foliage-enriched Ionic-flutes, derives from pedestals in the Louis XVI 'Grecian' manner of the 1770s (see a pair sold in these Rooms 9 June 1994, lot 51).
