Lot Essay

Based on a drawing by Baccio Bandinelli now at the Städelsches Museum, Frankfurt, this may be compared to other studies after the antique and Italian artists by De Bisschop, published by Professor Dr. J.G. van Gelder, Jan de Bisschop 1628-1671, Oud Holland, 1971, 86, no. 4, pp. 200-88. The putto in the lower left reappears in the artist's drawing in the Fondation Custodia, Institut Néerlandais, Paris (inv.no. 1978, t. 75) after Rubens' picture in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Grenoble (inv. no. 97). As Michiel Plomp has kindly pointed out the inscription '14.Marz.1665' on the verso is by Constantijn Huygens, and may be compared to other dates in his handwriting on the verso of several De Bisschop drawings. The purpose of these inscriptions is unclear.
An attribution to Constantijn Huygens has been suggested
