Lot Essay

This design for the arms of Stadholder-King Willem III (1650-1702) was possibly made for his visit to The Hague in 1691, after having been crowned King of England in 1689. De Hooghe is known to have designed triumphal arches for this occasion, mentioned as ' l'un des premiers esprits de notre siècle pour ces sortes de choses' (Nicolas Chevalier, Histoire de Guillaume III, Amsterdam, 1692).
A text on the verso mentioning officers and the City of The Hague would also seem to relate to the King's visit there
