Lot Essay
The attribution was kindly suggested by Marijn Schapelhouman on the basis of a comparison with drawings similar in style and technique by the artist in the albums from the De Graeff family on loan to the Rijksmuseum since 1917 (W.R. Veder, Het archief der familie De Graeff. Inventaris en regesten, Amsterdam, 1914, pp.32-6).
Similar drawings of stained glass windows are included in the first volume, pp.75-6 and 81-2, a drawing of a gravestone on p. 152 is also similar in handling. Schapelhouman further compares the present lot to a drawing of a stained glass window in the Fondation Custodia, Institut Néerlandais, Paris (M. Schapelhouman, Tekeningen van Pieter Jansz., 'Konstig Glasschrijver', Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum, 33, 1985, no. 2, pp. 71-92, pl. 3). Jansz., master of the art dealer and amateur draughtsman Jan Pietersz. Zomer, is known to have made several designs for stained glass. As Schapelhouman suggests, the present lot could be based on a 16th Century glass which would explain the date 1575 on the drawing
