Lot Essay

Klotz accompanied the army of Stadholder-King Willem III of Orange to the Southern Netherlands in the war against the French, as did Josua de Grave (cf. lot 93 in this sale) and Constantijn Huygens.
As mentioned by M.H. Breithbarth-van der Stok, Josua de Grave, Valentinus Klotz en Bernardus Klotz, Bulletin van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Oudheidkundige Bond, 1969, 68, 5, p.101, Klotz was on the Isle of Voorne Putten between 14 and 24 March 1672 where he is known to have drawn several towns near Nieuw Helvoet, such as Den Briel, Hellevoetsluis, Oudenhoorn and Nieuwenhoorn
