Lot Essay

The present lot may be compared to a drawing with an allegory of Patience dated 1585 in the Cabinet des Estampes de la Ville d'Anvers, Musée Plantin Moretus, Antwerp, (A.J.J. Deelen, Catalogue des Dessins Anciens, Ecoles Flamande et Hollandaise, Brussels, 1938, no. 121, p. 44, pl. XVII).
The inscription in the lower centre may be translated as 'the suffering that comes to us we must bear with love, faith, hope and patience'. The other inscriptions refer to further scenes shown: to the left the Healing of Bartimeus (Mark 10), the birth of Christ in the stable, the prodigal Son with the swines, and Lazarus and the dogs; to the right Christ on the Cross, the blind Tobit (Tobit 2), and Job on the dung-heap
