Lot Essay

Drawings with the same monogram, of similar subject and in comparable technique are listed by J.G. van Gelder, Jan van de Velde 1593-1641, teekenaar-schilder, The Hague, 1933, pp. 91-2, nos. 79-87, figs. 73-4. In Jan van de Velde 1593-1641, teekenaar-schilder, Addenda I, Oud Holland, 1955, 70, no.1, pp. 21-40, pls. 15-6 he adds further drawings to this group, which are all dated between 1623 and 1640. One very comparable to the present lot, also dated 1640 from the Welcker Collection is now in the Prentenkabinet, Leiden.
Van Gelder's attribution to Van de velde has since been doubted
