Lot Essay

Mainly known for his later landscapes, Verhaecht, who travelled to Florence and Rome in his youth, made a group of drawings of Roman views, all of similar size and technique, of which the present lot is part. A comparable drawing is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (M. Schapelhouman, Catalogue of the Dutch and Flemish Drawings in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, III, Netherlandish Drawings circa 1600, The Hague, 1987, no. 86); others of this format were sold in these Rooms, 30 November 1987, lot 22 and 25 November 1991, lot 11
