Lot Essay

Weenix's earliest dated drawing in the Albertina, Vienna dates from 1641. His landscapes show a clear influence by pre-Rembrandtist artists like his master Moeyaert and by Jan Pynas.
A comparable drawing, now in a Dutch private collection, was sold in these Rooms, 14 November 1988, lot 131. Other comparable drawings are in the Prentenkabinet, Leiden (J. Bolten, Dessins du Cabinet des Dessins....Leyde, The Hague/Amsterdam, 1985, no. 94) and at Munich, (W. Wegner, Die Niederländischen Handzeichnungen des 15.-18. Jahrhunderts, Berlin, 1973, nos. 1062, 1064-6, illustrated)
