Lot Essay

Andriessen along with Izaak Schmidt owned a successful wallpaper factory. Albums of his designs for wallpaper are in the Gemeentearchief and the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam. The present pair originally formed one drawing with a chimney in between. The inscriptions with 'indendag' are indications for the sizes. Both are related to drawings 'na 't leven', one of which is in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (inv.no. 1923-262). A comparable watercolour incorporating a chimney is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam
