Lot Essay

As Ms. Frerichs pointed out in the 1975/6 catalogue, this watercolour previously ascribed to Jacob van Strij, should be attributed to Erkelens. This artist, who was previously thought to be a 17th Century artist, was active around 1800. Comparable drawings are mentioned in B. Broos, Rembrandt en tekenaars uit zijn omgeving, Amsterdam, 1981, pp.114-6
