Lot Essay

The old Pijlsteeg in Rijnsburg now called Tramstraat. The wall to the right is that of the Begijnhof, the Church tower beyond it is the southern tower of the abbey church dating from the 12th Century, which was used by the Dutch Reformist congregation since 1579 and was enlarged by Pieter Post in 1633-60, while its spire was later reconstructed.
In the background is the bailiff house of the Ridderschap of Holland, which was demolished in circa 1800. A copy by J.C. Janson after the present lot is in a private Collection, Rijnsburg
